- 1826, popular name for Drummond light, torch that burns calcium oxide (lime) and gives off intense white light; invented by Scottish engineer Thomas Drummond (1797-1840), adpoted for lighthouses and later for the Victorian stage; hence figurative sense of limelight "on stage, at the center of attention."
